7 Curry Tour

The 7 Curry is a local dish loved by the majority of Guyanese. As the name suggests it is of East Indian heritage but is no longer found in India and has become a unique Guyanese tradition. It’s usually cooked on special occasions such as weddings and traditionally served in a freshly gathered lotus leaf. The meal features 7 different vegan curries eaten with rice and other accompaniments such as puri, achar. and coconut choka And the fun part is you get to eat it with your hands.

This a tour and a cooking class combined You get to prepare the meal with the Singing Chef on hand to guide you The tour commences at 9 am when we will all meet for a ten-minute briefing on the day. This will also include information and guidance on adhering to Covid 19 protocols.
We then go to a nearby waterway to gather our lotus leaves. After that, we will board the vehicle and take off to Merriman  Mall market to purchase some of the vegetables to make the 7 curries. We will meet Buddy and his family who have been selling water coconuts for over 50 years and enjoy a delicious, fresh, cold, water coconut.
We then make our way to
the world famous Tony’ Favourite's Puri shop where you will be able to watch a demonstration of how puri is made. Puri is an Indian type of Roti that is filled with seasoned yellow split peas mix. You will watch Tony prepare the puri ball then throw it to his son George who rolls it and then throws it to another family member who cooks it right in front of you. If you are up for it you will be invited to try making one yourself. We will take the puris back to go with the 7 curries but as they are so delicious we will, of course, have a fresh one right there served with a vegan filling and a local fresh fruit juice. Then it's time to go to The Secret Garden to cook the 7 curries. The garden is shaded with luscious fruit trees, herbs and vegetables and is a hidden gem of a location in Georgetown.
7 curry is traditionally cooked outside so you will be taken through the process of how each curry is made and learn some of the techniques from Eon John the Singing Chef
Delicious homemade fruit cordial and marsala tea is served during the cooking
We then introduce you to the spices used both in the 7 curries and the marsala tea. Special attention is paid to the health-giving properties of the 10 different spices used.
As soon as the curries are all cooked we will all sit down together under the gazebo and enjoy. Photo opportunities abound as you are pictured making the curries and then eating them on your own gathered lotus leaf plate in a beautiful setting.
To finish Eon John the Singing Chef will take to the stage for your private concert of lovingly crafted Guyanese songs
Then it is fond farewells and depart at 3 pm.       Price $100 per head for groups of 3 or more Please call for prices on smaller groups

Outstanding experience
Family
I would like to express how wonderful this experience was. First, the kindness and joyful spirit of Eon (the Chef) and his wife, Jessica is bountiful and makes for a very pleasant time. Not only was the day spent with them well organized, but included a diversity of scenarios across Georgetown. We met different people, including a medicinal herb man, and saw and participated with in the making of traditional roti. Later, in their beautiful home, Eon and Jessica were generous in sharing delicious food and knowledge with us, not only about the food being prepared but also about the complex history and culture of Guyana. I wholeheartedly recommend this activity to all visitors. You will not be disappointed.

A great way to discover Guyanese food!
Review of: Georgetown 7 Curry Tour
I went on the Georgetown 7 Curry Tour and found both the host and the overall experience to be fascinating. Eon John, the "Singing Chef" was a wonderful host for the tour the stories he shared about Guyanese food kept us all spell-bound.

There were lots of highlights to this tour, but one of my favorites was walking around the Bourda market with Eon who knew the local veg vendors and explained what went into the 7 Curry Tour. I also really liked visiting Tony's Puri Shop where we tried fresh made puris...I really felt like a local!

The best part of the tour of course was getting back to Eon's kitchen where he explained the process of preparing the 7 Curry dish and allowed us to get "hands on" in making the dish. The perfect afternoon concluded enjoying our 7 Curry in a garden setting while Eon serenaded us with songs of Guyana.

I'd definitely recommend this unforgettable food tour...you will not be disappointed!

more than just cooking
Review of: Georgetown 7 Curry Tour
this was our favorite day in Georgetown! a trip to the outdoor market gave us the opportunity to learn and taste produce we had never heard of. Eon and Jessica made us feel at home in their garden as we learned about the local culture, cooking techniques, and the benefits of the many fresh spices we were cooking with. my husband and i really appreciated the opportunity to feel like we were part of the local community for a day and can't wait to try cooking the recipes provided on our own.

Review of: Georgetown 7 Curry Tour
Enjoyed seeing Georgetown through a unique lens. I learned so much about cooking, had a delicious meal and listened to a little bit of wonderful music. If your in town this is a great way to enjoy a wonderful meal and learn about Guyana.

This is not a tour, it's an experience!!!❤️❤️❤️

Marianne
Jessica and Eon share a true experience of Guyana's culture and customs. Instead of just being a tourist, they bring you into their beautiful local life.

Learning the way to cook proper curry was an eye opener and delicious. All of the healing ingredients and vegetables will take your palate to another level and Eon has everyone involved in the preparation of the meal.

We started by gathering lotus leaves that were to be used as our plates. Then to the fresh market to pick the produce for the dishes.

We got to enjoy Tony's Puri shop. They must be the happiest family of all and truly enjoy what they do. That is a don't miss experience!

We then went to Jessica and Eon's backyard to learn from Eon, a French trained chef, how to make proper masala base that can be made into the different curries.

The tour is an entire experience that should not to be missed. You are not a tourist because they immerse you into their culture. Absolutely the best travel experience!❤️❤️❤️

Looking forward to doing the other tours!

Delightful Day of Dining
Review of: Georgetown 7 Curry Tour
I loved the 7 curry tour. The hosts - Jessica and Eon - are delightful and very knowledgeable. They shared their love of Guyana and food. We got to see to go to a pilori shop that tourists and many locals don't know about. Tony's piloris are the best that I have ever had despite his making over 1,000 per day. Eon is a French trained chef who is passionate about sharing his knowledge about cooking and all the special foods available in Guyana. He taught me how to properly cut an onion, how to make masala, and the proper way how to cook seven types of curry. Jessica shared her knowledge of spices, tea masala, Georgetown, and life in remote areas of Guyana. We ate the curries on lotus leaves. It was a delightful day, ending with Eon singing songs.

Being from Brazil, I always knew there were the British, French and Dutch Guyanas, but even though I had traveled the whole Amazon River, I had no idea what was “up there”, so we recently started flying this destination and I surely wanted to find out! GEO Georgetown Guyana
Checked out available tours, and boy, was I lucky to find The 7 Curries Tour, that took us picking Lilies, the Indian Immigrants plate used when this dish was served in special occasions! We visited a local market to buy our supplies, went to a Puri shop, basically a bakery hand making indian Puri bread, and off we went to make our 7 Curries!Vegetarian, Vegan, spicy as you wish!
Eon John, is not only known as an amazing Chef, in England and Georgetown, but as the Singing Chef! Wait til lyou hear his lyrics!
In life, there are must do’s, and learning to make Masala was definitely on my list!✅
Jessica, thank you for being so amazing setting up our tour even with a last minute notice! Loved meeting you guys!
Traveling and making new dear friends, haha, you know me, cooking involved, for me it was heaven!
